The short answer
No single sign proves a Telegram group is legit. Check the @handle letter by letter against the link on the project's own website, look at how far back the chat goes, find the admins, and read what is pinned. Leave if anyone asks for a seed phrase, a login code, a payment or a wallet connection.
Key facts
- Telegram usernames can only contain a-z, 0-9 and underscores, so a copied handle uses digits, underscores and added words.
- Only Telegram can assign the official verification checkmark. A tick typed into a group's name is an emoji.
- An admin's title is shown with every message they send in the group. A private chat shows no title.
- Telegram lets admins post anonymously and lets groups with 100 or more members hide the member list. Neither is a warning sign by itself.
- The free group check reads a public group's public metadata. It cannot check a private group, and it does not see inside the chat.
- A result of no flags means no scam signals were found from outside. It is not proof that a group is safe.
Can you tell if a Telegram group is legit?
Not with certainty, and not from one sign. A copy of a real group is built to pass a glance: the same name, the same logo, the same pinned post. It fails slower checks.
So collect signs. One warning sign is a reason to look harder. Any request for a secret or a payment is a reason to leave.
What should I check?
| Sign | Looks normal | Warning |
|---|---|---|
| How you got there | The Telegram link on the project's own website | A link in a private message, a reply or an ad |
| The @handle | Matches the official link exactly | One character off, or an added "official", "support" or "airdrop" |
| The history | Months of ordinary questions and answers | Starts last week, or only announcements and praise |
| The admins | Visible titles, answers given in the open chat | Nobody answers, or "message me privately" |
| The pinned message | Rules, and a warning that admins never message first | A claim link, a presale address, a countdown |
| Links | Go to the project's own domain | Shortened links, lookalike domains, QR codes |
| Urgency | None | "Last hour", "only 50 places" |
| Payment asks | None | A fee, a deposit, a seed phrase, a wallet connection |
How do I check the handle?
Telegram usernames can only contain a-z, 0-9 and underscores. A copy cannot use the same handle, so it uses what is left: a zero for an o, a 1 for an l, a doubled letter, an extra underscore, or an added word. Lookalike characters do the same job in the group's display name, where any alphabet is allowed.
Do not find the group through Telegram search. Copies can appear there under the same name. Open the project's website yourself, follow its Telegram link, and compare the handle with the one in front of you.
Two things that are not proof:
- A tick in the name. Only Telegram can assign the official verification checkmark. A tick typed into a name is an emoji.
- A big member count. Read the chat, not the number.
What do the admins and the pinned message tell me?
In a real group, admins are visible. Telegram shows an admin's title with every message they send in the group. Look for admins who answer questions where everyone can read the answer.
Two Telegram features can look odd and are not warning signs by themselves:
- Anonymous admins. Telegram lets an admin post under the group's name. It also means you cannot check who is speaking.
- A hidden member list. Groups with 100 or more members can hide it. Careful groups do this to protect members from private-message scams.
Then read the pin. A real group pins rules and often one sentence: admins will never message you first. A scam group pins the scam.
The most common trap is not the group. It is the private message that follows. An account with an admin's name and photo offers help minutes after you post. A private chat shows no admin title, so the copy looks real. See the fake admin scam.
What does the free group check read?
The free group check takes a public group's @handle. It scans the group's public metadata for lookalike brand handles, scam-pattern language and hidden-character evasion, and returns a verdict: flagged, caution or no flags. Nothing is installed, and the group is never contacted.
Its limits, stated plainly:
- Public signals only. It reads what the group shows to anyone from outside. It does not join, and it does not see the conversation or the admins' behaviour.
- Public groups only. A private group cannot be checked from outside.
- No flags is not a pass. It means no scam signals were found in the public metadata. It says nothing about how the group behaves inside.
Use it as one sign among the eight, not as the answer.
What should I do if it looks wrong?
- Leave without replying. Do not open links, scan codes or connect a wallet on the way out.
- Report it. Tap a message, or press and hold it, and choose Report.
- Tell the real project, through its website. If an account is pretending to be a person or a brand, Telegram's account for those reports is @notoscam.
- Ignore the private messages that follow. A "support" message may arrive after you leave.
If you already acted:
- You shared a login code or scanned a QR code: follow what to do when a Telegram account is hacked.
- You connected a wallet or paid a fee: see airdrop and giveaway scams.
Common questions
How can I tell if a Telegram group is fake?
Compare its @handle with the Telegram link on the project's own website. A fake usually differs by one character or one added word. Then look at the history, the admins and the pinned post. A group that pushes you to a private chat, a wallet connection or a payment is a copy or a scam.
Does a large member count mean a Telegram group is real?
No. Members can be bought, and a copy group often shows a large number next to a silent chat. Read the conversation instead. Real members ask ordinary questions, disagree with each other, and get answers from admins in the open.
Is a group with a tick in its name verified?
Not necessarily. Only Telegram can assign the official verification checkmark, and it appears as a badge, not as part of the name. Third-party verifiers use different icons. A tick typed into the name is an emoji anyone can add.
Can I check a private Telegram group before joining?
Not from outside. A private group has no public handle, so there is nothing public to read. What you can judge is who gave you the invite link, and whether that link also appears on the project's own website.
What should I do if I joined a scam group?
Leave, and do not open its links or answer private messages that follow. Report a message from the group with Telegram's Report option. If you shared a login code or connected a wallet, act on that at once.
